Our Centennial year exhibitions culminate with a historic show for the WAG and for Winnipeg – the presentation of 100 masterworks borrowed from 26 museums across Canada. Celebrating our country’s national and international holdings,Only in Canada brings together 50 Canadian works and 50 European and American works spanning the last six centuries. In a magnanimous gesture marking the longstanding friendship and artistic exchanges between Winnipeg and Minneapolis, the Minneapolis Institute of Art and the Walker Art Centre will also be lending eight European and American masterworks to the exhibition.
Included in the exhibition are major paintings by Rembrandt, Thomas Gainsborough, Claude Monet, Pierre-August Renoir, Vincent van Gogh, Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, Andy Warhol, and sculptures by Auguste Rodin, Alexander Calder, Richard Long, and Louise Bourgeois. Canadian artists include Cornelius Krieghoff, Paul Kane, James Wilson Morrice, Tom Thomson, Lawren Harris, Emily Carr, Jean-Paul Riopelle, Mary Pratt, Jeff Wall, Jane Ash Poitras, and Wanda Koop.
It is a rare occasion when a gallery can ask for the very best from a sister institution, and the WAG’s Centennial is one of those times. Only in Canada makes it possible for the WAG to showcase some of the artistic masterworks that highlight the richness of our country’s art holdings.
