Ai Weiwei (b. 1957 in Beijing), who filled the TATE's large Turbine Hall in London with more than 100 million hand-made painted sunflower seeds in porcelain in the autumn of 2010, is China's most famous contemporary artist; famous in the world, famous in his own country, not least for his politically provocative attitudes and his struggle for democracy. Ai Weiwei participated in the Louisiana’s exhibition Made in China in 2008 and will be taking over Louisiana with new works at the end of 2011 as the twelfth artist in the museum's series LOUISIANA CONTEMPORARY.
