Juan Muñoz (1953 – 2001) is known for his unsettling sculptures of individuals or groups placed in architectural settings. He described himself as a ‘storyteller’ and created sculptures in a ‘narrative’ manner, which broke with tradition.
In his Conversation Piece series, bronze figures are arranged in carefully staged groupings, apparently frozen mid-conversation. Like many of Munoz’ figures, those in Conversation Piece III are slightly smaller than life-sized, playing with our sense of scale and perspective and transforming the atmosphere in our Sunley Gallery which overlooks the North Sea.
in 2001, Muñoz created the second commission for Tate Modern's Turbine Hall, Double Bind. Read more about the commission here.
