Making Sense of Dementia: Film Screenings and Discussion

Making Sense of Dementia

Film Screenings and Discussion

Three films about the experience of Dementia for carers, relatives and sufferers, introduced and discussed by the film makers.

THE WAITING ROOM – 8½ MINUTES
Produced and directed by Jane Harris and Jimmy Edmonds
A BEYOND GOODBYE PRODUCTION.

First screened at the 8th Annual Conference on Dementia and End of Life (London, December 2013), Jane Harris’ film THE WAITING ROOM is about the last four years of her father’s life, spent on a psychiatric ward in his home town of Ayr. It illustrates the frustrating experiences of people living with dementia, and the continual battles with a system of treatment that fails to make sense of the patient's experience.

EX-MEMORIA – 16 mins
A Film By Josh Appignanesi
Starring Sara Kestelman and Natalie Press
Produced by Mia Bays

Developed with the Bradford Dementia Group, and funded by The Wellcome Trust, EX MEMORIA has already been distributed to hundreds of careworkers, residential home managers, charities and specialists in the field, and proven to be a life-changing tool in enhancing understanding of the care situation.

KEEPING MUM – 10 mins
A film by James Murray-White

This short film is a highly personal exploration of the mother/son relationship, further complicated by a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s Disease in 2007. Filmmaker James Murray-White filmed his mother over 5 years, from 2007 to the present day, during which time he charts the subtle changes in his mother’s memory and sense of reality, as well as her changing living situation.
