The Queensland Art Gallery (QAG) and Gallery of Modern Art (GoMA) are located 150 metres from each other, on the south bank of the Brisbane River.

To mark GOMA’s fifth anniversary, acquisitions of works by leading artists from the Gallery’s five contemporary collecting areas are on display.

Indigenous artist Vernon Ah Kee has risen quickly to the forefront of urban-based conceptual art and his three large, lush portraits — Annie Ah Kee, Annie Ah Sam (A)and Bella Ami, all 2008 — re-examine anthropological photographs of his own family, allowing them to be viewed through Aboriginal eyes.

A specially commissioned 22-metre-long Tongan ngatu ta¯’uli (black barkcloth) is a spectacular addition to the Pacific art collection. Black barkcloths are traditionally made for a chiefly purpose, and this extraordinary work can be viewed in the ‘Threads’ exhibition.

As a spectrum of vibrant colour, contemporary Australian artist Emily Floyd’s Steiner rainbow 2006 considers the rainbow’s symbolic associations with alternative political movements, signifying utopian ideals and a desire to do things differently.

A sculpture by Kohei Nawa, one of Japan’s most significant young artists, was enormously popular with visitors to ‘The 6th Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art’. A major new work by the artist,PixCell-DoubleDeer#4 2010, now joins the Gallery’s contemporary Asian art collection.

Untitled 2007–08 is from Cindy Sherman’s celebrated ‘Balenciaga’ series. A work by one of the world’s most influential living photographers, this acquisition is an important addition to the Gallery’s holdings of contemporary international photography.
