Royal Museum of Fine Arts Antwerp

When strolling around the Antwerp Southside the visitor's attention is inevitably steered to the magnificent building accommodating the Koninklijk Museum voor Schone Kunsten (Royal Museum of Fine Arts). Though the stairs towards the entrance are impressive, the threshold is actually low since it only takes a modest fee to enter this museum with its world-class art collection.

Visitors enjoy a splendid view on the history of artistic life in the Southern Netherlands and Belgium. Indeed, the collections of the Royal Museum comprise unique paintings by Flemish Primitives such as Jan van Eyck and Hans Memling as well as the work of Quinten Metsijs, the founder of the Antwerp Art School. The finest paintings by Peter Paul Rubens, Anthony van Dyck and Jacob Jordaens are major players in this intriguing story that doesn't end with the Old Masters, but continues into the nineteenth century with Salon artists and modernists like James Ensor and Rik Wouters. National art is exhibited next to and in confrontation with work by artists from abroad such as Jean Fouquet, Titian, Frans Hals, Auguste Rodin and Amedeo Modigliani.
