The Ashmolean's collections span the civilisations of east and west, charting the aspirations of mankind from the neolithic era to the present day. Among the many riches it houses the world's greatest collection of Raphael drawings, the most important collection of Egyptian pre-dynastic material outside of Cairo, the finest Anglo Saxon treasures beyond the British Museum and the foremost collection of modern Chinese art in the western world.

The royal elephants were often depicted by court artists, in expressive individual portraits or in scenes of hunting and processions.

The Ashmolean Museum will launch its major new exhibition programme with The Lost World of Old Europe: The Danube Valley, 5000–3500 BC.

The exhibition will include cartoons and preparatory drawings for this project, which have never been exhibited before in England.
