La Vérité (entre 1898 et 1902)

Verite (Truth), 1898 -1902, Jean-Jacques Henner
Verite (Truth), 1898 -1902, Jean-Jacques Henner

Henner received few commissions for large-scale decorative programmes. Truth is a first version for the work, which no longer exists, commissioned in 1896 for the Salle des Autorités at the Sorbonne in Paris. In this painting, two superimposed nude are clearly visible because having restarted his painting on the same canvas, Henner painted directly over the first version by simply turning it ninety degrees. It is devoid of attributes, such as the mirror usually associated with representations of Truth.
